I had a long run looming on my marathon raining plan but luckily the New Forest Half Marathon was on so I decided it would be more fun to do that instead of flogging out a long run on my own (I got in a bit of a mess with bogs, streams, brambles and a snake the last time I did that ).
I had no idea how it would go as I’d been diligently following my marathon training plan but not finding it easy and I’m still experimenting with what I can eat on these long runs so I don’t feel sick (I’ve tried loads of stuff!) Today I tried a bagel eaten 2 hours before the race with just jam (no butter) and I took jelly babies to fuel on the go. I didn’t carry water-just drank at the stations.
This half was on trail-lots of lumpy grass and rutted tracks, forest paths and hills I felt good for most of the race There was a bit of mental pressure urging me to stop to contend with at around 11 miles but after giving in briefly I got back at it.
I finished in 2.29 (watch time, haven’t seen chip yet) and I’m more than happy with that And the jelly babies seemed to do the trick as well. SO happy not to face stomach issues as I usually do AND my shoulder that I’ve been having treatment for behaved itself too.
Here’s an indepth look at the shoes I wore:
My overall feeling as I crossed the line was relief-not to have finished (but, yes THAT too!) but to maybe be making progress with the nausea issue.
