“As your race has sadly been cancelled, we’d like to invite you to commit to running a distance over a 7 day period in July; choose from half marathon, marathon or 100K. A virtual Race to the Stones!”
When the email came through from the race organisers I wasn’t even going to consider it at first. I was already doing a couple of virtual races and about to go to my first meeting with an open water swimming group. I had enough on. But… I found myself constantly juggling the figures in my mind – would there be the slightest possibility that I could run 100K in 7 days? It sounded doable when I split it into 5x14K and 2x15K. But it would mean running high mileage every day without a break and I’d never done that before. I didn’t know what it would feel like; but I wanted to.
I entered before I had a chance to waver.
One thing on my side is that I’m a manic researcher and planner so in the days leading up to the start I read tons of stuff about how to manage it and knew exactly what I planned to wear, what hydration vest I’d take and what I’d carry to eat. I could give you an in-depth account of the predicted weather for each of the 7 days.
